The Vatican Library Expands Web3 Usage with NFTs for Manuscript Backers

The Vatican Library has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative to expand its reach into the Web3 space by offering non-transferable NFTs to backers of its esteemed manuscript collections. This project, currently in an experimental phase, is exclusively available to Italian supporters of the Vatican Apostolic Library.

Italians have the opportunity to participate in this project by sharing it on their social media accounts until July 16. In return, they will receive a “Silver NFT” and access to a selection of 15 manuscripts in high-resolution images. Additionally, those who choose to financially support the project will be rewarded with a “Gold NFT” and access to high-resolution images of all 21 manuscripts in the special collection.

The Vatican Library has partnered with NTT DATA, a leading Japanese technology company, to advance its Web3 initiative. Together, they aim to leverage Web3 technologies to engage with supporters and expand the library’s digital presence. NTT DATA has outlined plans to invest $4 billion in Web3 infrastructure and is preparing to launch a crypto wallet through one of its subsidiaries by the end of 2024.

Father Mauro Mantovani, prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library, highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the library’s heritage. He emphasized NTT DATA’s crucial role in supporting the mission to make the library’s unique collections accessible to the public, regardless of background or beliefs.

The Vatican Library’s foray into the Web3 space is part of its ongoing efforts to modernize and enhance public access to its treasures. In 2020, the library launched a revamped website with improved search features and simplified access to digitized materials including manuscripts, coins, and incunabula – early European printed works predating the 16th century.

The Vatican Library’s Web3 project represents a significant step towards embracing digital technologies to widen its audience and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations. Through innovative initiatives like NFTs and partnerships with tech giants like NTT DATA, the library continues to adapt to the digital age while staying true to its mission of making its invaluable collections available to all.
